Canadian army Lieutenant Harry Colebourn bought a bear cub for $20 from a hunter in Ontario and named her Winnipeg after his hometown, and smuggled her to England during World War I where she soon became the regimental mascot. After the war he donated her to the London Zoo, where “Winnie” became a great favorite of the son of local playwright Alan Milne. His son, Christopher Robin Milne, named his own teddy bear after her.
